For Sale: Undercover Blindfolded Bear Crewneck
To say that Jun Takahashi’s now decades long tenure as the head of his Undercover label is eclectic would be an understatement. Being able to stand between the Streetwear and Avant Garde Luxury fashion pillars of fashion for as long as he has and constantly reinventing his label from season to season is a feat that has only been achieved by some of the most prominent figures in the entire history of contemporary Japanese fashion.
From humble beginnings in Gunma prefecture, graduating from Bunka college and opening the Nowhere shop alongside Nigo in 1993, to making near annual pilgrimages to Paris where he spent years honing his skills as a runway designer; Takahashi’s influence is extensive.
Focusing on his Streetwear work today, throughout his career, Takahashi has presented a wide range of imagery on tshirts and sweatshirts. Often communicating themes of identity, existentialism, anarchy, and the human condition. One of the most prominent bits of imagery found throughout his work is the Blindfolded Bear, seen on this piece. The bear demonstrates themes of blind love and affection for others. At times, this motif has been reinterpreted in notable collabs such as a vinyl toy with Medicom and Kaws, or a small collection of apparel done with Bape in the 2000’s.
This sweatshirt is in gently used condition with some minor flaws. There is a slightly noticeable amount of cracking on the print, and there are a few loose stitches around the waist. With proper care, this piece will continue to age beautifully, creating a vintage fade that can only be achieved with many more years of use.
